Plan would scrap job of jail superintendent

The Grays Harbor Sheriff's Office has proposed a budget that involves eliminating the county jail superintendent’s position, according to The Daily World of Aberdeen.

Undersheriff Rick Scott said the proposal does not include any other layoffs but requires significant cuts in services, and it will require union concessions to meet the required $1.28 million budget reduction. “We had to make some very hard decisions,” he said, to make funding cuts mandated by the county commissioners.

Sheriff Mike Whelan presented the proposed budget to the commissioners Wednesday afternoon. Scott said notifying Jail Superintendent Dave Christensen of the decision made for one of the worst days of his career.

Scott said eliminating the jail superintendent position saves about $100,000 a year.
