Union plans initiative to check equity firms
The Service Employees International Union plans to file a citizens initiative today that deals with the practices of equity firms the State Investment Board invests pension money into.
The group has scheduled a 1 p.m. rally at the Capitol that coincides with events in 25 countries that address the "perks and tax loopholes" enjoyed by private equity firms.
Emily Paulin, who has been helping to draft the initiative in the Legislature for SEIU, said the measure would include requirements that the State Investment Board could not invest in companies that did not disclose chief executive pay; she did not identify other elements of the measure.

Candidates to speak at Greenpeace tour
OLYMPIA — Greenpeace will bring its Global Warming Story Tour to The Evergreen State College today, including a debate between Democrat Cheryl Crist and Republican Michael Delavar, two of the four candidates for the 3rd Congressional District.
The group is bringing "Rolling Sunlight," a biodiesel-powered demonstration vehicle that also has solar panels. And its members plan to do interviews with people on campus about how global warming affects their lives and what they are doing about it.
The event runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. It was not clear why Republican Christine Webb of Tumwater also was not on the debate panel.
Greenpeace spokespersons in a global-warming awareness rally said in a news release the event is "an opportunity to let Brian Baird and the rest of Congress know that we want action." Organizers also said Baird could not attend because he's in Washington, D.C.
