The Olympian
Mallory Dobbs will never know how many pins her bowling ball knocked over.
Just as the North Thurston High School freshman prepared to release the ball, the lights went out at Westside Lanes in Olympia Thursday night.
"It was too late for her to hang on," Timberline coach John Wilson said.
A power outage in west Olympia turned Westside Lanes black, forcing the high school matches between Timberline and North Thurston and also Shelton and Central Kitsap to be postponed.
"We waited around for like 10 minutes and it wasn't happening," Wilson said. "There wasn't a hint that the power was going to come back."
Wilson said he was hopeful that the computers at Westside saved information from Timberline's first completed game against North Thurston. Otherwise, the match would have to be made up from the start.
"We finished the first game and were in the eighth or ninth game of the second game," Wilson said. "One big boom and it was dark. You kid hear the kids ... the ones who just let go of their balls. Everyone flipped out their cell phones and got some light from that."
Wilson said the match against North Thurston might resume Monday.
NT-RR GET FIRST VICTORY
River Ridge senior Eric Lemcke won three events, including the 100-yard backstroke in state-qualifying time, as North Thurston-River Ridge swim team won its first meet as a combined team at Auburn Mountainview.
Lemcke swam the 100 backstroke in 1 minute, 2.37 seconds, which beat the Class 2A state meet qualifying standard of 1:02.4. He also won the 200 Individual Medley and was part of the winning 400 relay.
North Thurston-River Ridge won the meet, 110-75.
"It was a real good meet," coach Jak Ayres said. "I'm real happy for the boys."
TIMBERLINE 42, SUMNER 27
Sophomore Demer Wilder pinned his 119-pound Sumner opponent in 35 seconds to help lead Timberline in a nonleague victory.
"I liked how they were aggressive and did a good job of turning kids to their back," Timberline coach Jeff Birbeck said of his wrestlers. "We got quite a few pins."
Six to be exact. Fellow Blazers Jacob Coulter, Ian Carroll, Andre Courie, Jonathan Schuster and Zach Hahn contributed to the pinfest.
