03/17/2006 – What is wrong with you, editor? Why in the world would you lead a front page story with WASL failure and a big ol' picture of a black kid? Is the Daily O a racist paper? This is (I remind you) 2006 and we should all be way past that kind of spin. I (and many others I suspect) will settle for nothing less than an apology -- and don't wait 'till tomorrow -- get it done now on the internet! -- Doug McClanahan, online comments

Executive Editor Vickie Kilgore: Reporters and photographers at The Olympian work very hard to reflect the increasing diversity of our community. That's typically not a problem when we talk to students in the North Thurston School District, the most racially diverse of our school districts. Education reporter Heather Woodward felt she had a positive story about students who were working hard at passing the WASL and were almost there. (''Many WASL takes fail by just a few questions,'' 1A, March 17)

Timberline staff identified students who fit the bill. They happened to be African American. Woodward and photographer Toni Bailey carefully crafted a photo caption that reflected the success of the students as well as the challenge ahead. Both students were very articulate in their own comments, and they had good advice for other students. We think the coverage represented them and our community well.
