Thoughts of biking madness and catfish craziness

03/31/2006 – All of a sudden it's bike season at my house.

Sarah, my wife and rabid cyclist, is getting ready for the Capitol Bicycling Club's hardcore Tuesday/Thursday evening rides -- they start next week. I'm trying to avoid finding myself in one of these Rides From Hell.

Truth be told, the club also has moderate rides, so there is something for everybody here.

Anyway, Sarah's got bikes on the brain -- one bicycle is even parked in the living room. I'd complain, but I kind of like having outdoor equipment around the house.

A reader wrote in and asked for good spots to catch channel catfish. Off the top of my head, I'd say Chambers Lake right here in Thurston County, the lower Yakima River, the I-82 ponds in Yakima County and the big Columbia River pools.

A lot of our local lakes -- remember, most of them are closed until April 29 -- have scads of bullhead catfish. But a big channel catfish burns line off the reel and fights, fights, fights. I've even caught them on a fly rod, which is wild.

Have a great weekend!
