Religious coverage reasonably reflects community

04/17/2006 – Is The Olympian a Christian newspaper? I can't help noticing the three prominent front-page feature articles (with large photos) in the past few days about Christians celebrating Holy Week and Easter. I have no problem with that level of coverage about people of faith. I would characterize myself as a person of faith (though not of any organized religion), and welcome coverage and discussion about it in the media. I just haven't noticed that the Olympian has covered people of other faiths at that level. There was a feature about Passover in the "Living" section a few days ago, but nothing like the coverage that I assume will continue on Sunday about Easter.
I'd like to see the Olympian's writers visiting more different kinds of houses of worship and giving them the same level of attention that "mainstream" Christians have received this week. It could help to bring wider public understanding about people who have a different relationship with the divine than oneself. -- Duncan Green, Olympia

The Olympian's readership market is dominated by Christian churches, which recognize Easter week as a significant time. It's only fitting that the newspaper recognize those observances with prominently placed content. Please note The Olympian also published a front-page photograph last week of a local Passover observance as well as a cover story on our features section on Passover food.
