While not wholly local, Opinion page intensely focuses on South Sound

06/07/2006 – Why are most of your columists taken from other newspapers around the country rather than written by you with the flavor of our local interests on the topics? It would seem that if the issues are relevant, the discussion should come from you. -- Deea J. Niemi, Rochester

Opinion Editor Mike Oakland: We run multiple columns each week to provide readers a broad range of viewpoints and seek to balance liberal and conservative perspectives. We use 22 local columnists on a regular basis -- members of our Board of Contributors take turns writing a Wednesday column on local issues, and Friday's opinion page features local Diversity Panel columnists. We routinely run guest columns by local contributors and the daily editorials almost always are focused on local topics. Throw in the letters to the editor and we believe there is ample local perspective on the editorial page daily.
