1, 2, 3 Dunningtons, and Timberline is out

Shelton pitcher Tristin Richerson ought to be thanking Mr. and Mrs. Dunnington every day.

If it wasn't for the Dunnington brothers - Jacob, Jordan and Tyler - Richerson would have a tough time winning games.

Between those four players, the Highclimbers overcame Timberline for a 6-2 win on Tuesday in a Class 3A Western Cascade Conference baseball game.

Jordan Dunnington had an RBI double, Tyler Dunnington singled and stole second base, and Jacob Dunnington added an RBI double as Shelton scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to turn around a 2-1 deficit, and Richerson finished out a complete-game effort to earn the decision.

For the game, the Dunningtons combined for five hits, four of them doubles.

"The nice thing is that all three Dunningtons will be back next year," Shelton coach Don Daniels said. "They are a junior, sophomore and freshman."

The trio made the Blazers pay for a key mistake in the big inning.

"We made some base running mistakes early to take us out of some runs, but they had a third-strike passed ball that allowed two of those runs to score for us in the sixth, and we added some timely doubles," Daniels said.

"Overall, our defense was pretty solid and Richerson pitched a pretty good game. It was just a good game for us for the most part."

LAKES 3, CAPITAL 2

The Cougars could not recover from a game-opening three-run deficit, mustering up only five hits against WCC opponent Lakes.

Capital's best offensive production came from Taylor Miller, who went 2-for-2 at the plate, including a triple and drove in a run.

"We didn't play our best baseball and we lost," Capital coach Eric Stark said.

The Cougars slipped to 5-6 overall and 4-3 in league play. They play Lakes today.

"We have a chance to compete against the same team and have a good chance to win."

Olympia 6, Wilson 1

Adam Conley pitched six innings and had eight strikeouts to help give Olympia a commanding win against Narrows League Bay Division rival Wilson.

The Bears were offensively bolstered by junior Corwin Patis, who went 3-for-3 including a double and two runs driven in. Junior Carter Manning also helped at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a double and a run driven in.

ROCHESTER 3-6, Kalama 1-7

The Warriors split a series on Kalama in the Southwest Washington 1A Trico Division matchup.

Rochester had a shutout through six innings courtesy of senior Justin Eastman's presence on the mound. Eastman had 11 strikeouts while providing an offensive boost with two hits.

Nick Katt and Devon Willadsen also persevered with two hits through the challenging Kalama pitching.

"Their pitching did a great job keeping us off-balance," Rochester coach Jerry Streigel said.

In the second game, Rochester couldn't suppress two distinct scoring bursts from Kalama.

The first scoring burst was aided by three errors by Rochester in the first inning.

Fastpitch
Aberdeen 1, River Ridge 0

The pitchers were the stars when River Ridge traveled to play Aberdeen in fastpitch as both hurlers picked up more than half of their teams' outs in the game.

Bobcats' Abby Tometich recorded 15 strikeouts against the Hawks.

River Ridge's Lindy Baxter had 12 strikeouts.

Unfortunately for the Hawks, Courtney Nelson was able to triple in the seventh for the Bobcats and, on an errant throw, scored the game's only run.

"It was a true pitchers' battle," River Ridge coach Jami Macki said. "They did all the work."

Capital 2, Timberline 1

The older Timberline squad might have been too content with a 1-0 lead until Capital responded with two goals in two minutes to close the WCC match.

The Cougars managed scores by Thai Buy and Josh Phillips and were led defensively by keeper Nick McDonald's five saves.

"This is a big win for us because we're so young," Capital coach Devin Proctor said.

"Timberline has a lot of senior leadership, and our players were making a statement above their age."

The Blazers scored first after 50 scoreless minutes with a goal by Justin Meyer. Both teams had nine shots.

"It looked like the momentum was going our way," Timberline coach John Hayes said about the game when it was tied 1-1. "We just needed to shoot the ball more. I felt we had quite a few scoring chances."

Elma 2, Tumwater 1 (SO)

Tumwater's string of close losses continued against Elma.

"It's not that we're playing bad soccer; we actually are playing pretty good soccer when it comes to passing and possessing the ball," Tumwater coach Bryan Winkler said of his team's seventh loss in a row. Six of Tumwater's losses are by one goal. "Nobody was really very dangerous on goal. Their keeper made two or three saves. We just did not get off quality shots."

Elma scored first off Odin Dobson's goal in the 37th minute. Tumwater pulled even when Hank Bryant scored on a penalty kick in the 53rd minute.

Hoquiam 2, Centralia 0

The Centralia Tigers took their shots at the Hoquiam Grizzlies, but they couldn't find the back of the net.

"We had 24 shots and six corner kicks," Centralia coach Sue Parke said. "Hoquiam played well and their keeper (Tim Priebe, 15 saves) had a great game. We came out flat."

Nathan Arevalo scored what eventually would be the winning goal in the third minute. The Grizzlies' second goal came in the 66th minute off a corner kick.

"We had a good 20 or so minutes," Parke said. "Hoquiam got the win."

Olympia 1, North KITSAP 1

Casey Minnick scored the Bears' lone goal in a 4A Narrows Bay tie with North Kitsap.

"Another game we completely dominated," Olympia coach Colin Stewart said. "We created a lot of good chances in the box but we don't have anyone who's clinical and aggressive to put these (shots) away."

The Bears outshot North Kitsap 7-2 but keeper Trenton Fluetsch gave up a goal in the 50th minute.

"We don't seem to have that intensity with scoring chances that should be put back in the net," said Stewart, who plans to work his team through this weakness in practice.

Olympia stands at 6-2-4 overall and 3-2-2 in league play.

Shelton 3, Yelm 2

The Highclimbers were able to hold on and beat Yelm, which scored two goals in the last 13 minutes.

"The game started getting a little rough," Shelton coach Brian Fairbrother said. "There were a couple of yellow cards, then they scored twice."

Shelton keeper Reid Lusignan had two saves; Yelm's Steven Bates had six.

"Austin Case played a really good game for us at center midfielder," Fairbrother said.

The Highclimbers' Chad Trogstad was able to keep Yelm's Miguel Gonzalez from scoring.

"I had him man up on Miguel," Fairbrother said. "And Chad did an excellent job on him. Miguel still managed to get open and get his touches, but Chad played him well."
