Sluggish Bears get past Tumwater

TUMWATER - Even though Olympia pulled away late in the second half Tuesday night, coach Tessa Effland wasn't pleased with her girls soccer squad's first-half effort in a 3-0 win over Tumwater, a team the Bears had never faced.

"We started out pretty slow," Effland said. "It was a good eye-opener for the girls. We weren't connecting very many passes and we only had six shots in the first half."

Effland made some changes at halftime and put Marina Austin up front to change the attack. It ended up being a stellar move, since Olympia took 21 shots in the second half, for a 27-1 advantage in the game.

"It's a new team that we have on the field," Effland said. "We're figuring what systems works."

Austin, Natalie Daniels and Ashley Baker each found the back of the next for the Bears. Hana Klimik had one save in the shutout.

Timberline 1, River Ridge 0

Considering the Blazers have a young defense and freshman goalie, the shutout was certainly an opening season treat.

Scoring in the second minute, senior forward Danna Warman placed a pass in goal from Shaina Thompson. Gradually, the Hawks defense tightened up and the scoreboard remained unchanged.

"Their speed and pace is more technically sound than last year," Timberline coach Jeff Peltier said of River Ridge. "In the second half, they kept us busy with a lot of hustle."

Melissa Glainyk, the Blazers' net keeper, collected three saves in her debut shutout performance while Timberline outshot the Hawks 19-4.

"She did a pretty good job," Peltier said of Glainyk.

Black Hills 1, Shelton 1

A goal by senior forward Kathleen McGee put the Wolves up for six minutes until Shelton's Brittany Bowman responded in the 39th minute. The game's stalemate result was discouraging for Black Hills coach Lisa Summers but she saw positive points throughout.

"Our defense was amazing," Summers said. Wolves keeper Katie Jones nabbed 11 saves to Shelton's nine by Tia Avey. "We just have to get used to playing with each other, being consistent and knowing our roles and responsibilities."

Capital 2, Aberdeen 1

Sophomore Kari Flaatrud scored the Cougars' winning goal with five minutes remaining in their opening game against Aberdeen.

"This is her first time on varsity and her first game," Capital coach Devin Proctor said. "We tied it up and we tried to win it. It was a matter of it they could do it in time.

Capital goalkeeper Libby Stone had three saves in the win.

North Thurston 0

The Bears opened their season off thoroughly with a prompt defeat of the Rams.

"We served pretty tough and they had trouble receiving," said Olympia coach Laurie Creighton. "I was pleased with our kids' serving, that was one of the major differences (in the game)."

Liz Armstrong and Michelle Woodward led the Bears in serving, going 16-for-17 and 13-for-14, respectively. Armstrong had three aces, and Woodward had two.

Timberline's John Jordan earned medalist honors with a

1-under-par 35 at Capitol City Golf Course, but the Blazers' lineup couldn't match Lakes.
