"Centralia is really improved over last year, and I was really proud of the way the girls played that first game," Tumwater coach Tana Croft said. "We had 11 kills and no errors as a team in that game. It was the best game we've played so far, error-free except for four missed serves."
Amanda Warner had five of her six kills in the first game, while Cristin Richards had an outstanding match with 12 kills, three blocks and 14 of 16 serving with four aces for the T-Birds, who improved to 3-0 in the league.
River Ridge 3, Hoquiam 1
Senior Lindy Baxter had five kills and three aces as the undefeated Hawks flew over Hoquiam unscathed.
"We're coming together as a team," River Ridge coach Robert Higashi said. "Their confidence is there, and they're starting to have fun."
Higashi said the team is "close" to hitting its stride.
Girls soccer
Chehalis 2, Centralia 1
A defensive struggle to hold the Bearcats' two young, small, speedy forwards became the highlight of the Evergreen Conference clash for Centralia (1-2 league, 1-4 overall).
Sophomore Kiersten Abbot scored a minute after a goal by Centralia's Jenny Milton, and freshman Leesha King scored the winner in the 74th minute to give Chehalis its first league victory.
"We worked real hard on this," Chehalis coach Tino Sanchez said. "Normally, we're right in the game, and it showed tonight.
"Our defense did a pretty good job of shutting them down in the first half," Centralia coach Sue Parke said. "They had some fast forwards who never got through to score."
But the Tigers' defense looked green in the second half trying to match Chehalis (1-2 league, 1-4 overall).
"Our inexperience is hindering us somewhat," Parke said.
Rachel Hunt had 10 saves for the Bearcats, who were outshot by Centralia 21-12.
Tumwater 2, Aberdeen 0
It was another Evergreen Conference win and another shutout for the defensive power Tumwater.
The Thunderbords' undefeated streak in league play was extended courtesy of scores by Caitlin Calnan and Brandy Orgill in the second half.
But it's the defense that stole the show with senior keeper Kelli Tokos' five saves and a steady backfield of sophomores Ashley Villm and Megan Herbert.
"They're playing good defense as a team," Tumwater coach Lew Kittle said. "(The formation) flatback four requires a lot of coordination. The mindset of our defense is you want a shutout every game."
Tokos contributes by stopping shots that "I thought were going to go in," Kittle said. "She's real calm and has good direction. Confidence in your keeper, when they play with poise are key. Her kicks have gotten better, too."
Capital 2, Clover Park 0
Kelly O'Dell and Jenna Cotey each scored in the first half as the Capital Cougars jumped ahead and breezed past the Warriors.
"It's good to get the win, but it could easily have been four or five to nothing," Capital coach Devin Proctor said. "We had like 15 shots in the game, but the girls could not just finish the ball.
"They were trying their best, but soccer does not always go that way. You've got to finish your chances."
Courtney Johnson and Hannah Anderson each had an assist for Capital, while Libby Stone and Mikaela Cox split time in goal and had two saves each.
Elma 3, River Ridge 1
Elma trailed 1-0 until midway through the second half, then tallied three goals to pull away for its first Evergreen Conference win.
Brandi Thomas, Kaylene Spence and Makenzie Sanders scored for the Eagles (1-2 EvCo, 2-2 overall).
"It was a big improvement from our last two games," Elma coach Darcy Dotson said. "The girls hustled all game long."
Dotson said the Eagles had scoring chances in the first half but changed offensive strategies at halftime, then exploited openings in the middle of the River Ridge defense.
Black Hills 3, Hoquiam 0
Jordan Parker, Alli Isaacson and Mary Fontenot scored goals as the Black Hills Wolves improved to 3-0 in the Evergreen Conference and 3-1-1 overall.
"We played hard and scored three different ways," said Black Hills co-coach Paul Peirce. "It just shows we have a lot of different people who can score different ways."
Wolves goalkeepers Katie Jones (one save) and Mea Jones (no saves) saw little action from the Hoquiam attack.
Rochester 3, Tenino 0
Despite Amanda Fisher's 11 saves, the Tenino Beavers could not subdue Rochester's offensive attack.
Tenino fell to 1-1 in the Class 1A Southwest Washington Evergreen Division.
Shelton 4, North Thurston 0
Kelsea Houston scored a goal and chipped in an assist to help carry the Shelton Highclimbers (2-0 league, 3-0-2 overall).
Keeper Ali Lund had the shutout for Shelton, which outshot North Thurston 18-1.
Boys golf
Timberline 204, Shelton 233
Medalist Cameron Peck shot 1-under-par and was helped by John Jordan's 38 and Ben Talbot's 40 in undefeated Timberline's home win over Shelton.
Tumwater 189, Black Hills 232
Tommy Kjorlaug shot 1-under-par at Tumwater Valley Municipal Golf Course to help the Thunderbirds cruise to a comfortable win over Black Hills.
Jordan Boede's 37, along with 38s by Jim Jensen and Josiah Sweeney, clinched the Evergreen Conference match.
Max Carter was Black Hills' best player with a 43.
Capital 189, Clover Park 282
Jarred Bossio shot 1-under-par and was aided by the competitive swings of his fellow Cougars. Kyle Kanda (37), Joey Woods (38) and T.J. Griggs (38) all helped keep the team cruise to victory.
The Cougars improved to 2-0 in the Class 3A Western Cascade Conference.
Boys tennis
North Thurston 5, Timberline 0
The doubles team of senior Matt Huynh and sophomore David Schuster gave the Rams a commanding victory over WCC rival Timberline in the shutout.
North Thurston improved to 5-1.
Yelm 5, Clover Park 0
Senior Charlie Spencer won in straight sets to help contribute to Yelm's shutout of Clover Park.
