T-Birds extend EvCo shutout streak to 8 matches

ELMA - Julie Plank scored three goals and goalkeeper Kelli Tokos made five saves Thursday night as the Tumwater Thunderbirds beat Elma 7-0 to remain unscored upon in Class 2A Evergreen Conference girls soccer.

The Thunderbirds, who led 5-0 at halftime, are now 8-1-1 overall and 8-0 in league.

Plank got a hat trick in just her third game playing up front. She's scored five goals in the last three games.

"Julie is a hard worker," Tumwater coach Lew Kittle said. "She's one of those players who'll play wherever you want. I asked her to play up front in the last couple of games and she's done well."

Capital 2, North Thurston 0

Jena Russell and Jenna Cotey each netted goals for the Cougars as Capital continued its run through the tough Western Cascade Conference with another league victory. The Cougars are now 6-1 in the WCC.

Hannah Anderson assisted on Russell's goal and Cecil Flores set up Cotey's strike which came in the match's 60th minute.

"It was good to get the win," Cougars coach Devin Proctor said. "We've only lost one game in league and it's important to keep the girls focused and moving forward."

Capital's lone loss in WCC play came against Lakes, and Capital will face the Lancers in a rematch on Tuesday.

"That'll be a key game for us," Proctor said.

BLACK HILLS 4, CHEHALIS 1

Kathleen McGee scored her 10th and 11th goals of the season and Black Hills dominated Chehalis to improve to 6-3-1 overall and 6-2 in the EvCo.

Black Hills led 3-0 at halftime.

"We played much better," Black Hills coach Lisa Summers said. "We took care of the ball better. We played more a possession style. Much better passing. A couple of our goals came because we crashed the box."

Tareyn Brougham and Alli Isaacson scored one goal each for Black Hills.

Shelton 5, Clover Park 0

The Highclimbers remained in the upper echelons of the WCC with an easy win over Clover Park. Brit Bowman scored twice and Michelle Robinson had a pair of assists in the win that helped Shelton improve to 6-1 in the WCC.

"I thought we passed the ball extremely well," Shelton coach Brett Bartlett said. "Their keeper did a phenomenal job - she was flying all over the place. We were putting shots all over and she was gobbling them up - it was quite amazing."

The Highclimbers outshot the Warriors 30-2 in the victory.

Lakes 1, Timberline 0

The Blazers mounted a terrific defensive effort, but were unrewarded at the end when the Lancers knocked home a goal in the 75th minute for a WCC victory.

It was the Blazers' second straight one-goal loss.

"We played really well, they just got the luckier bounce," Timberline coach Jeff Peltier said. "It could have gone either way. We just need to stop just playing really well and start winning some games."

Peltier credited senior defenders Danna Warman and Veronica Hernandez with keeping a lid on things in the backfield.

"They played outstanding defense - they really shut down the big threats that Lakes had."

Volleyball
River Ridge 3, Chehalis 0

Sophie Russell and Courtney Blume paced the Hawks' offense with five kills apiece as River Ridge improved to 5-3 in the Evergreen Conference with a sweep of Chehalis by game scores 25-17, 25-13, 26-24. Setter Halee Hernandez had 11 assists but was lethal from the service line with five aces.

"It was a good win," Hawks coach Robert Higashi said. "The girls played as a team - they had fun. We took some strides today."

OLYMPIA 3, SOUTH KITSAP 0

Liz Armstrong had 12 kills and Brigit Miller had 26 assists, helping Olympia to improve to 8-2 overall and 4-2 in the Narrows League.

"We came back after a couple of tough losses," Olympia coach Laurie Creighton said. "It took us a little bit to get started in game one. We came back with some tough serving. It was a great team effort."

MARY M. KNIGHT 3, TAHOLA 1

Ali Scott had eight kills, and Cassy Willey had 23 assists and six service aces as Mary M. Knight improved to 6-1 for the season.

"Cassy Willey is an all-around player," Mary M. Knight coach Kitty Brehmeyer said. "She's all over the court. But it takes six to make it work."

TUMWATER 3, HOQUIAM 0

Cristin Richards had 11 kills and Amanda Warner went 20-for-21 from the service line with six aces to help Tumwater remain undefeated in eight games this season.

Tumwater had only six hitting errors for the match.

"I was impressed with how they played at a high level all three games," Tumwater coach Tana Croft said. "That's hard to do sometimes."

SHELTON RUNNERS SWEEP

Shelton senior Dan Paine bested his competitors by nearly three minutes, winning in 16 minutes, 19.57 seconds in a four-way dual against Timberline, North Thurston and Clover Park at the Shelton Huff and Puff, a 5K course.

On the girls end, junior Sarah Brownstein (20:31.38) and sophomore Gwen Milroy (20:34.61) helped Shelton remain undefeated by taking the top two spots.

Boys tennis
Olympia 5, Stadium 0

Cameron Williams and Preetam Talukdar each defeated their singles opponents 6-1, 6-2 in Olympia's sweep.

The Bears improve to 7-3 overall and 4-1 in Narrows League play. Olympia travels to Gig Harbor today to face the Tides in a 3:30 p.m. make-up match.

BLACK HILLS 3, RIVER RIDGE 2

Tomas Berschauer continued his run in singles after switching from doubles, winning his match in straight sets to help lift Black Hills to victory.

"Tomas was playing double," Black Hills coach John Glenn said. "He's quit a singles player. What a great player to watch."

Black Hills improved to 2-3 for the season.

Capital 210, Timberline 210

It's why teams use six golfers; in case there's a tie after five. Capital edged the Timberline Blazers at Capitol City Golf Course, but it took Mason Berschaur's 48 to do it in a tiebreaker.

In contrast, Timberline had two players shoot higher than 48, which undermined John Jordan's 2-under-par 34. The round was Jordan's career low on the course and included a double eagle on a 480-yard par-5.

"I figured we had to play really well, to run with (Capital)," Timberline coach Don Backman said. "What I didn't expect was that neither of us played well. This was a season high score for both teams."

To complement Jordan's feat of a double eagle, Capital's top two players - Jarred Bossio and Kyle Kanda - each had an eagle on the same hole for a memorable day.

"I don't think I've ever seen that before," said Backman, who also could recall coaching only one other match that went to a tiebreaker.

"They all know that every stroke counts," Backman said.

TUMWATER 199, CENTRALIA 218

Tommy Kjorlaug shot an even-par 35 and both Jimmy Jensen and Josh Garvison shot 40s, helping Tumwater improve to 9-3 overall and 6-1 in the EvCo.

In a scheduling snafu, Tumwater drove to Centralia and the Tigers drove to Tumwater. The two teams teed off at Tumwater Valley at 4 o'clock.

"We had five minutes to warm up," Tumwater coach Scott Killough said. "I told them not to use it as a reason not to do well. They didn't."

Kjorlaug averaged 36 strokes for the season and has a strong chance as repeating as the league leader.

"He only had one bad round," Killough said. "Unfortunately that was at Aberdeen and that was a 42. For most kids, that would be a phenomenal day."

Tumwater's lone loss was by seven strokes at Aberdeen, which was the league champion with an undefeated record.
