Federation endorses a few challengers

The largest state workers union, the Washington Federation of State Employees, rolled out its endorsement list over the weekend, with a few notable items. They are backing Pierce County Executive John Ladenburg to unseat state Attorney General Rob McKenna, a Republican, and supporting Darcy Burner, a Democrat challenging U.S. Rep. Dave Reichert in the 8th Congressional District.

Rep. Richard DeBolt, the House Republican leader from Chehalis, didnt get the nod. He faces a Democratic challenger, but so does Sen. Dan Swecker, from the same district, and Swecker was endorsed. As was DeBolts seatmate, Rep. Gary Alexander.

Mostly it was Democratic incumbents who won the endorsements, including the rest of the congressional delegation (no endorsements in McMorris and Hasting races yet). Exceptions: Secretary of State Sam Reed, a Repbulican, was endorsed. Three state Senate Republicans got the nod, including Swecker. And 12 House Republicans, including Alexander and Rep. Tom Campbell of Roy.

Gov. Nikki Haley has endorsed Mitt Romney for president and will campaign with him in South Carolina this weekend.

“He is a conservative businessman who has spent his life working in the economy, and he understands exactly how jobs are created,” Haley said in a news release from Romney’s campaign.

Realtors endorse McKenna for governor

The Washington Realtors trade association has endorsed Republican Rob McKenna for governor in 2012. The group made its announcement today after a 17-member association panel interviewed both McKenna and Jay Inslee, the leading Democratic candidate, in Olympia.

Realtors had endorsed McKenna for attorney general in 2004 and 2008, but it has been known to back Democrats – including an early endorsement of U.S. Sen. Patty Murray’s 2010 re-election bid, which was done before former realty salesman Dino Rossi entered that race.

State Rep. Connie Ladenburg has added her name to the growing list of state lawmakers not seeking re-election in 2012. The Tacoma Democrat announced this week she is running for the Pierce County Council, and she indicated in an email that Helen Myrick and David Sawyer are among possible candidates to replace her.
