Florida takes DSHS calls for a spell

Department of Social and Health Services people are rolling around the state in their apple bus, trying to sign up uninsured kids for health care. But for a while there, the hotline was going south on them.

"For a brief period this week, all of the Washington state calls were being forwarded to the Florida Kid care program, which was a little disconcerting for some callers," said agency spokesman Jim Stevenson.

The toll-free number used for the program was set up by the federal government, which has a big time contract with AT&T to administer the lines, Stevenson said, and they went haywire Monday. "Apparently it was a dozen states, for a few hours their calls got misdirected to Florida."

All’s well at 877-543-7669 now, he reports.

The bus is part of a broader effort called Apple Health for Kids. You can see the 30-second spot here.
