Gregoire on Palin

• Published August 29, 2008

They've got plenty in common. Northwesterners: Gregoire vacations in Hayden, Idaho, Palin was born down the road in Sandpoint. Public leaders, mothers, governors. So if Palin isn't ready to be vice president, as Gregoire and nearly every Democrat says, is Gregoire ready to be VP?

"The difference, really, I think is three terms as attorney general, four years as governor of a state of six million people. And I am not vying to be vice president of the United States," Gregoire said.

Gregoire also takes issue with the Republican line (promulgated by McCain's people apparently, and picked up by the state party here) that Palin's role as commander of the Alaskan National Guard is military leadership.

"As commander in chief of the Washington National Guard, I deploy them for in-state, or to sister states, for needs of humanitarian efforts or to respond to a natural disaster," she said. "That's the role of the commander in chief of the National Guard. It’s not the military role of the president of United States."

But Gregoire said she’s developed a friendship with Palin, and sent her a card when one of her children was born. She congratulated Palin for becoming part of history.

"I am confused by the pick by John McCain, so more than Sarah Palin, I think the question is, what does this say about John McCain? He’s a man who suggested, if not outright stated that Barrack Obama put presidential politics ahead of judgment."

UPDATE: Another one of those dratted North Idaho kids reminds me that Hayden is down the road from Sandpoint (if south =down. I had an editor who used to think that elevation = down). And on that note, go Vandals.
