Malory Salazar: Challenges adversity

THE OLYMPIAN

Age: 17

Grade: 12

School: Avanti High school

Hometown: Olympia

Parents: Scott and Carmen Salazar

Best personal achievement: I have the strength to walk through any adverse situation with a positive attitude, the ability to find the best in it and to grow stronger.

How I spend my time: Playing rugby for Budd Bay and Washington All Stars, working as a barista at Perfect Cup Espresso and doing various art projects

Favorite subjects: History and art

Favorite movie: “Little Miss Sunshine.”

Favorite book: “The Four Agreements” by Don Miguel Ruiz

Dream job: A successful and creative hair stylist, color specialist and fashion designer

Someone I respect: My math teacher Todd Thedell. Even though I struggle in math, he stands by me, has confidence, and never gives up on me, which has led me to greater success.

College I’d like to attend: I will be attending an elite hair academy, as well as a fashion designing school.

Someone famous I’d like to meet: Ellen DeGeneres, because she is an amazing advocate for the GLBTQ (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transsexual, Queer) community

Someday, looking back on my life I’d like to be able to say: I have lived a purposeful life and have achieved all my goals and dreams.

Biggest challenge facing teenagers today: Being set up to fail by teachers and administrators by being treated as a whole rather than individual, which is why I am so grateful for my experience and participation at Avanti High School, because we are treated on a personal, respectable level.

One thing in the world I would change if I could: There are a plethora of issues that impact the world today, but the one I am most passionate about is equal rights for gays and lesbians. It’s important that everyone has the same benefits, recognition and fairness as everyone else. Everyone should be supported in loving whomever they wish to.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years: Living my life passionately and fulfilling my dreams as a successful hair salon owner in California

Staff comment: Malory is our school’s Diversity Club (Mosaic) president. She is a staunch advocate for the GLBTQ community and a local-area all-star rugby player. Malory is a visible student leader on campus. Mike Velasquez, principal, Avanti High School
