It'll be a hot time, for days

OLYMPIA – The heat wave that is expected to last through Thursday started Sunday, with temperatures hitting 89 by early evening at the Olympia Airport.

The high could hit triple digits by Wednesday – 100 degrees – according to the National Weather Service. Highs will be in at least the mid-90s through Thursday and lows are expected to be in the low to mid-60s.

“Thursday night will be the first shot of cooler air coming in, with highs in the mid-80s Friday through Saturday,” said National Weather Service meteorologist Johnny Burg. “Sunday will be in the upper 70s.”

The National Weather Service also issued an air stagnation advisory, with hot humid weather and light breezes expected.

Still, despite the chance of triple digits, the South Sound is unlikely to break the all-time high temperature record, Burg said. That record high was 104 degrees in August 1981.

The weather service advises that people stay hydrated and avoid strenuous activity during the heat of the day to avoid heat stress. People also should check on their elderly and disabled neighbors and relatives.

TIPS TO STAY COOL

The national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offers these and other tips for avoiding heat-related illness:

 • Drink nonalcoholic fluids, regardless of thirst or activity level.

 • Stay indoors and, if possible, in an air-conditioned place, even if it’s for a few hours. Electric fans will not prevent heat-related illness when temperatures are in the high-90s.

PUBLIC POOLS

Several public pools will be open this week:

 • The pool at the Tanglewilde Recreation Center is open seven days a week, with recreational swimming from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. and family swimming from 6 to 8 p.m. Day passes are $6.  • The Tenino Quarry Pool will be open today and Tuesday, said Kim Nelson, a cashier at the pool. The pool is normally open from noon to 7 from Wednesday through Sunday. The pool is at 195 W. Park St. in Tenino.
