Going from Yale to finish line
The OlympianOlympia's Clare Kane may have stumbled into a new training schedule. After flying to the East Coast for a recruiting visit to Yale over the weekend and after skipping an invitational meet she could have won, Kane went out fast in Wednesday’s cross country meet with Stadium and Mount Tahoma, leaving the pack behind for an easy win. She covered the 3-mile course at LBA Park in 19 minutes, 15 seconds. “She won it handily,” Olympia coach Cris Violette said. “She went out hard and no one went with her.” But Stadium took the next five spots and beat Olympia, 21-39. Violette thought Kane had something to prove after missing Saturday’s Fort Steilacoom Invite, a meet Violette thought Kane could have won. “From what I could tell, she was wanting to go hard today just so she can see how she can do,” Violette said. “She looked great.” In the boys meet, Olympia’s Nate Brennan, in the middle of a hard workout schedule, led from start to finish to win in 17:05. The Bears took the top four spots. Ted Knudsen finished second, Dusty Miller was third and Colin Lang took fourth. “Colin raced really well,” Bears coach Jesse Stevick. “He came from behind. Dusty finished ahead of Ted at Fort Steilacoom for the first time. So, we’ve got some friendly inter-team rivalry going.” Olympia won with 21 points, Stadium was second with 44 and Mount Tahoma was third with 68. “It was great to get four guys in front of Stadium’s first finisher,” Stevick said. “If we could just get a fifth guy.” Olympia girls finished in a tight group as Kathleen Hosa was eighth, Amy Jin was ninth, Kirsten Allen was 10th and Natalia Gimson was 12th. Stadium won with 21 points and Olympia had 39. “Stadium doesn’t have a front-runner like Clare, but they have a really good pack,” Violette said. Volleyball Olympia 3, South Kitsap 0: Lisa Chulich had 10 kills and seven digs and setter Michelle Christy had 27 assists, helping the Bears improve to 4-0. “Lisa played well,” Olympia coach Laurie Creighton said. “She is starting to get a good connection with Michelle. But it wasn’t a clearly played match. Hopefully, we got it out of our system.” Olympia’s Sarah Stoker had seven kills and Megan Triggs had three aces. Golf Chehalis 202, Tumwater 207: Seth Nickerson shot a 2-over par 38 to lead the Thunderbirds at the Newaukum Golf Course, but Tumwater couldn’t match the Bearcats’ depth. Tumwater top four golfers finished ahead of Chehalis’ top four by 10 strokes. Tumwater’s Jimmy Jensen shot a 39, second on the team. “It’s disappointing,” Tumwater coach Scott Killough said. “I knew that whoever won this match was going to win league. I know I’m getting a little ahead of myself, but both of us will probably go undefeated here on out.”
