YELM - The Yelm Tornados have played only five games, but yet they already have a new single-season rushing leader.

Senior running back Andrew Almeida ran for 275 yards – his second-best output on the season – and scored four touchdowns, all while setting a Yelm single-season rushing record in the Tornados’ 40-8 Class 3A Olympic Western League win over Port Angeles on Friday night.

The previous single-season rushing mark at Yelm was 1,220 yards, Yelm coach Randy Swilley said. Coming into Friday’s game, Almeida had 1,007 yards. Almeida now has 1,282 yards and 19 touchdowns through five games.

“The offensive line gets him through that first level,” Swilley said. “He does some amazing things after that. He has great vision and breaks a lot of angles.”

Yelm jumped out to a 14-0 lead on the Roughriders after the first quarter, then increased its lead at halftime to 20-0

Yelm improved to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in the OWL.

Capital 56, Bremerton 12

It wasn’t the way the Cougars wanted to start the game, but fortunately they got their offense on track after the first quarter en route to a Olympic Western League win over the Knights on the road. Capital (3-2) has now won three straight games.

After Capital scored on its first offensive possession, Bremerton used a big pass play to pull the score within one at 7-6. Soon after, Bremerton took a 12-7 lead in the first quarter, but Capital coach J.D. Johnson credited his players for not panicking.

“I was proud of them,” Johnson said. “They kept their composure. They didn’t get down.”

Capital had 429 yards of offense, including 299 on the ground. Running back Tyler Sundberg had a team-best 185 yards rushing and scored three touchdowns.

Quarterback Alex Everson had his best outing of the season, Johnson said, completing 7-of-11 passes for 130 yards and one touchdown to Jourdan Weiks. Everson also rushed for a touchdown.

On defense, Jimmie Ross had a team-best nine tackles and Capital had five team interceptions, led by Kellen Camus’ two.

Timberline 63, Olympic 21

The No. 6 Blazers improved to 5-0 for the first time since 2004 and held Olympic star running back Larry Dixon to a season-low 22 yards rushing in their home win over the Trojans at South Sound Stadium.

Timberline exploded for 49 first-half points – its best first-half output through five games.

But the defense also was a bright spot, Timberline coach Nick Mullen said.

“The defense set out to make a statement tonight,” Mullen said. “They wanted to prove a point.

“They came out focused. The kids played really hard, they were really disciplined tonight.”

Jordan Radcliffe had 150 yards on 16 carries and quarterback Kevin Russell was 16-for-24 for 180 yards passing.

N. Thurston 41, N. Kitsap 13

Rams running back Lawyer Tillman rushed for four touchdowns as North Thurston improved to 4-1 with a road win over the Vikings.

North Thurston has won four straight games after dropping its Week 1 nonleague game to Chehalis.

Against North Kitsap, Tillman had touchdown runs of 6, 14, 15, and 21 yards. Matt Reid also had a rushing touchdown, a 12-yard run in the third quarter.

Quarterback Jake Klumker had a 33-yard passing touchdown, finding Oliver Nelson in fourth quarter.

Black Hills 49, Centralia 21

The Wolves scored at least 14 points in each of the first three quarters against an always-tough Centralia team in their EvCo win.

Black Hills and Chehalis, which defeated Tumwater, 34-14, on Friday night, remain the only unbeaten teams in league play.

Cody Peterson had another stellar game, rushing for 230 yards on 26 carries and scoring three touchdowns. Taylor Charette also scored two touchdowns and had 22 yards on the ground.

“We’re excited,” Black Hills coach Jack Zilla said. “The kids played hard the whole 48 minutes. We’ve struggled with that in the past.

The Wolves’ defense also shut down the play of the Tigers’ 1-2 offensive tandem of Zack Baldwin and Dominick Courcy.

“The kids did a nice job,” Zilla said.

South Bend 44, Northwest Christian 14

The story of the game for the Navigators was the four fumbles inside the 10-yard line – one near the opponents’ goal line and three near their own – against South Bend, the No. 9 team in 2B.

“It was very frustrating,” Northwest Christian coach Pete Fulton said. “We rushed for over 250 yards, but the fumbles were killers.”

The Navigators (3-2) came into Friday’s game on a two-game winning streak. Steven Dunn was the bright spot offensive for the Navigators offensively with 120 yards rushing.

River Ridge 20, Elma 14

The Hawks got their first win and improved to 1-4 after an EvCo win over the Eagles.

Marques Ford had touchdowns runs of 35 and 7 yards to lead the Hawks. Freshman receiver Brad Wallace hauled in an 85-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Adam Walker in the second quarter.
