New ferry to bear name of Indian chief

THE OLYMPIAN

The Washington state Transportation Commission decided Tuesday to name a new 64-car ferry the Chetzemoka, after a former chief of the Jamestown S’Klallam tribe who befriended Olympic Peninsula settlers in the 19th century.

The ferry is expected to go into service next summer on the Port Townsend-Keystone run. It’s under construction at Todd Pacific Shipyard in Seattle.

The chief lived from 1808-1888.
