The game was tied, 14-14, at halftime, and Bellarmine got the ball to start the third quarter. But the Bears held them to three downs and a punt.
Olympia then marched down the field, converting on two fourth-down plays and scoring on Pine’s 3-yard run to go up, 21-14.
“In the second half, we shut them down,” Olympia coach Bill Beattie said. “Our defensive staff did a great job of making adjustments. It was a good road win for us.”
Olympia took a 7-0 lead on Numia Magalei’s 50-yard touchdown run.
After Bellarmine tied it on a long drive, Pine scored his first of two touchdowns on a 5-yard run, capping a 75-yard drive for a 14-7 lead. Jared Mercer completed two long passes to spark the drive.
With four minutes left in the second quarter, Bellarmine tied the score, 14-14, with another long scoring drive.
“We only had the ball four times in the first half, and we scored on two of them,” Beattie said. “Both teams in the first half made some long drives. We didn’t get many opportunities.”
But the Bears’ defense shut down Bellarmine in the second half, holding the Lions to negative yards in the fourth quarter.
Olympia (7-1) finishes the regular season Thursday against Foss.
Northwest Christian 28, Raymond 6: Steven Dunn rushed for 165 yards, and Northwest Christian’s defense had seven quarterback sacks and held Raymond to one touchdown.
Dunn, a 6-foot-2, 195-pound junior running back, had Northwest Christian’s first two touchdowns, scoring on runs of 6 and 20 yards despite the muddy field. It was Dunn’s fourth straight 100-yard game.
“We controlled the game from start to finish,” coach Pete Fulton said. “It was mudbath. The whole field was mud. Both teams combined for eight turnovers. We played well, other than the turnovers.”
In the second quarter, Northwest Christian quarterback Zach Thomas hooked up with Fess Doelman for a 10-yard TD pass. Jesse Stacy then scored on a 25-yard run to finish the first-half scoring for Northwest Christian.
Northwest Christian, which finished with four turnovers, led 22-6 at halftime.
Northwest Christian’s Kevin Damatio had two interceptions with 65 yards in returns.
“Our defense played well,” Fulton said. “We just gave up some bombs. But that was about it.”
River Ridge 31, Hoquiam 28: Trailing 24-15 at halftime, River Ridge scored the next two touchdowns and held Hoquiam to one touchdown in the second half.
River Ridge took a 7-0 lead on Marques Ford’s 69-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.
Hoquiam answered with two touchdowns to go ahead 14-7 on Max Dickinson’s 67-yard touchdown pass and his 5-yard quarterback sneak.
River Ridge came back with another big play on Pewee Sanders’ 60-yard touchdown run to take a 15-14 lead.
But Hoquiam regained the lead on Jordan Harrington’s 22-yard run late in the second quarter.
River Ridge took a 31-22 lead on Ford’s 5-yard touchdown run and Adam Walker’s 1-yard run to pull out the win.
Rochester 14, Tenino 0: After a scoreless first half, Rochester struck for two touchdowns in the third quarter.
Ben Caoile scored on a 15-yard run to give Rochester a 7-0 lead.
Later in the third quarter, quarterback Chris Bishop completed a 19-yard touchdown pass to John Holman for a 14-0 lead.
After losing its first four games of the season, Rochester won its second straight and improved to 2-4. Tenino dropped to 0-6.
Chehalis 39, Centralia 7: Quarterback Ben Ternan threw two touchdown passes for Chehalis, which led 26-0 at halftime.
Chehalis improved to 8-0 and finishes regular-season play at Black Hills on Friday in a game that will determine the Evergreen Conference champion.
Cross country
Navigators triumph: Led by individual wins by Elizabeth Weber and Lucas Graham, Northwest Christian claimed the boys and girls titles at the Pacific 2B League cross country championships.
Graham ran the 2.9-mile course at Ocosta High School in 15 minutes, 9 seconds, breaking a school record. Teammate Justin Hodlen placed second in 15:25.
The Northwest Christian girls took the top five places. Weber won in 18:39, breaking the school’s sophomore record.
Joanna Sowers placed second in 19:11, and freshman Hailey Bredeson was third in 19:22.
The Northwest Christian boys finished with 28 points, followed by North Beach (45) and Ocosta (83).
The Class 2B district meet will be Oct. 31 at The Evergreen State College.
Swimming
Olympia finishes third: Clara Heffernan won the 200-yard freestyle and 500 freestyle in season-best times, helping lift Olympia to third place at the Narrows League championships.
Heffernan, a junior, won the 200 in 1 minute, 56 seconds and took the 500 in 5:12.1.
“Those are her two fastest times of the year,” Olympia coach Mel Smith said. “She has three weeks to the state meet. We’ll crank it up for another two weeks.”
Olympia’s Kelsey Forbord, a sophomore, won the 100 backstroke in a season-best 1:02.6.
Kathryne Culhane placed third in the 100 breaststroke to qualify for districts. Hanna Flogin dropped three seconds in the 100 backstroke to finish fifth and qualify for the district meet.
Olympia’s Miranda Early qualified for state in the 100 butterfly. Thirteen of Olympia’s 18 swimmers had lifetime bests.
“We’re pretty excited,” Smith said. “We’re really hopeful.”
Gig Harbor won the meet with 372 points, Stadium was second with 266, and Olympia was third with 196.
The district meet is next Friday and Saturday at Rogers High School in Puyallup.
Tennis
Olympia doubles team advances: Olympia’s Reuben Talukdar and Alexei Calambokidis advanced to today’s doubles finals at the Narrows League tennis tournament.
Talukdar and Calambokidis, seeded third for the tournament, defeated Bellarmine’s third doubles team, 6-3, 6-2, then beat Bellarmine’s second doubles team, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
The Olympia duo will face Central Kitsap’s Cameron Gilman and Zack Hill-Thiry in the semifinals.
