A strong cold front will approach South Sound today, creating a variety of weather hazards, according to the National Weather Service.

Winds are expected to increase today to 20 to 30 mph at the coast and in the northwest interior, with stronger winds in the mountains. Ridgetop winds in the Olympics could range from 45 to 65 mph.

The strong winds will be accompanied by heavy rains in the mountains, making for dangerous conditions. Drivers using mountain passes this weekend are advised to be prepared for winter-like conditions.

An inch and a half of rain is possible between this afternoon and Friday morning, creating the possibility of flooding in some areas.

A cool air mass is expected to move into Western Washington by Friday, and snow levels in the Cascades are expected to drop from near 11,000 feet to near 3,500 feet.
