What: Alder Lake Park is a 161-acre park with play areas for kids and a campground with year-round (except Dec. 20-Jan. 1) availability. The park, run by Tacoma Power, has group camping areas as large as 20 sites. One of the park’s biggest attractions is the 330-foot Alder Dam.

Where: Alder

Getting there: Follow Highway 7 south to Alder. Turn south on School Road and follow the signs to the park.

Cost: $5 for day use parking. Campsites range from $19 to $26.

Of note: There are 173 individual campsites. Some of the campsites are located farther down the lake at Rocky Point. Sunny Beach Point is a popular destination for swimmers in the summer, but it is closed Sept. 16-May 14. Alder Lake Park has a playground, open areas, a picnic shelter and grills. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited at Stacel Point. The park has two boat launches and coin-operated showers.

History: Alder Dam was built in 1945.
