Yu later died, according to authorities.
John C. Vu, 41, was transported to Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia, where he underwent surgery, Chief Deputy Jim Chamberlain said. Vu allegedly shot David Mapu, 21, in the Meadows neighborhood Thursday night.
According to Chamberlain:
About 2:30 p.m. Saturday, a team of deputies converged on a residence in the 1700 block of Judd Street Northeast in Lacey after receiving a tip that Vu was hiding there.
A car leaving the residence was stopped, and the female driver confirmed that Vu was in the house. Inside the house were Vu, his girlfriend and the homeowner.
Sheriff’s deputies surrounded the house and detained the homeowner while Vu crawled out a back window.
A deputy saw Vu and yelled at him to stop, but Vu continued to flee. The deputy fired one shot from his .223-caliber rifle about 3:30 p.m., striking Vu in the rear torso – likely because he was running from the deputy, Chamberlain said.
The name of the deputy, a 14-year veteran, was not disclosed. He will be placed on administrative leave with pay, standard procedure after an officer-involved shooting. The Thurston County Critical Incident Investigation Team will handle an investigation into the shooting.
The deputy still was at the scene after the shooting, and his name likely won’t be disclosed until his family has been notified.
That could take one or two days.
The other people in the house were detained Saturday, and Vu’s girlfriend could face charges if she was aiding the suspect, Chamberlain said.
Detectives on Friday charged Vu, an alleged gang member, with second-degree murder while armed with a deadly weapon and obtained a warrant for his arrest. Vu has an extensive criminal history dating to the early 1980s, when he lived in California. At the time of the slaying Thursday, he had an outstanding warrant for his arrest for a felony parole violation.
There also was a warrant out for Mapu’s arrest. He was wanted on suspicion of two counts of first-degree robbery, court papers state.
Sheriff’s deputies found Mapu lying in the street in the 700 block of Lucerne Lane Southeast about 6:40 p.m. Thursday with a gunshot wound to his back. He was pronounced dead a short time later.
