LinksTwo DUIs in one night: David Proffitt, 53, of Rochester was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence twice July 15 night near the Lucky Eagle Casino, according to the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office. He was arrested about 7 p.m. when Chehalis Tribal Police asked for the Thurston County Sheriff’s assistance with a possibly intoxicated driver, then was cited and released. Three-and-a-half hours later, tribal police again called the sheriff’s office for assistance, and Proffitt again was arrested on suspicion of DUI.
“Speaking bubbles” for Olympia City Hall stir controversy: When residents found out about the bronze comic-strip bubbles that were set to festoon the new City Hall – as well as the $180,000 price tag – many expressed outrage. Responding to the controversy, the Olympia City Council voted in late April to scuttle the bubbles, which were designed by Seattle artist Dan Webb. Instead, the city will restart the art-selection process for the outside of the building once construction is complete in 2011.
Olympia boy becomes a media sensation: Brandt Bickford, 7, appeared on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” multiple times in early 2009, chatting with the host about the solar system, his dance moves and his 27-year-old “girlfriend,” Leslie. Brandt, a student at Garfield Elementary School in Olympia, first appeared on the show after the producers saw a YouTube video of him talking about the solar system. The video was shot by a friend of Brandt’s parents, Peter and Davi Bickford.
Magazine feature leads to Olympia mixed martial arts champion’s arrest: Jeff Monson was sentenced Oct. 1 to 90 days of work release while on electronic home monitoring after pleading guilty in July to first-degree malicious mischief and second-degree malicious mischief for vandalizing the Capitol and an armed services recruitment center. Monson was arrested after admitting in a December 2008 interview in “ESPN The Magazine” to spray-painting an anarchist symbol on the Capitol.
