Weekend Getaway: Federation Forest State Park

What: Federation Forest State Park has 619 acres of old-growth Douglas firs and 121/2 miles of hiking trails. There are picnic areas in the forest and on the White River. There is an interpretive center in the park, three interpretive trails and an amphitheater.

Hours: 8 a.m. to dusk. The interpretive center is closed.

Activities: There are various hiking trails including short, children-friendly trails and longer trails for serious hikers. The area gives you the opportunity to spot such animals as eagles, herons, bobcats and bears.

Getting there: Take Highway 410 about 18 miles past Enumclaw. At the interpretive center near milepost 41, turn right into the park.

Cost: None

History: The park was built by the Washington State Federation of Women’s Clubs. The park was dedicated in 1949.

Of note: The park has ADA-compliant restrooms and four standard restrooms. Part of the Naches Trail, one of the first pioneer trails between Eastern Washington and the Puget Sound, still exists in the park. This is a day-park, no overnight camping is allowed.
