Basketball: Rash of games get tournament going as teams make push for state berths

There's certainly a good and a bad when it comes to the Class 3A subdistrict basketball tournament between the Western Cascade Conference and Olympic League.

The good? Three out of the four teams in each league get at least one postseason game.

The bad? It’s single elimination for the teams that aren’t league champions.

For the second straight year, the top three teams from each league on the boys and girls sides will face off in a mini subdistrict tournament to determine the four seeds for the West Central/Southwest District III tournament, which starts Friday and Saturday.

The subdistrict games begin tonight for the boys teams and Tuesday for the girls teams. For the teams in the WCC, these will be their first games in more than a week. Their regular season ended Feb. 12.

The league champions – Capital (boys and girls) in the WCC and Bremerton (boys) and Port Angeles (girls) in the Olympic League – are guaranteed spots in the district tournament, but will play one another to determine the No. 1 and 2 seeds. The Capital boys play host to Bremerton tonight at 7, and the Capital girls play host to Port Angeles at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

The other games are winner-to-district, loser-out.

In tonight’s boys matchups, Timberline plays host to Olympic and Yelm travels to Port Angeles. Both games tip off at 7 p.m.

Port Angeles defeated Olympic, 52-50, in an Olympic League tournament game Friday that determined the teams’ seeding for tonight’s subdistrict games. For Yelm, this is its first postseason appearance since 2003.

In 2A, even though the District IV girls tournament doesn’t start until Friday, a tiebreaker is needed tonight to sort out the league’s No. 5 team.

Aberdeen and Chehalis finished with 6-8 records in the EvCo standings after their games last Friday.

The two teams will take to the court tonight at 7 at Aberdeen to determine the league’s fifth and final playoff team.

The winner plays host to Washougal, the 2A Greater St. Helens League’s No. 4 team, at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the district play-in game for the right to play top-ranked River Ridge to open the district tournament.
