Vote for Hyer's mayor pro tem successor is set

Olympia Councilman Joe Hyer has announced he plans to leave his position as mayor pro tem effective Tuesday, citing a workload that has worn him out.

“Five years on this council has been a tremendous toll emotionally, physically and mentally for me, as well as running a business,” said Hyer, who also owns The Alpine Experience and Olympic Outfitters, two downtown outdoor-gear stores.

Hyer made the comments at an Olympia City Council meeting Tuesday and were taken from a meeting video. He did not say his legal troubles were a factor in his stepping down. He has been charged with three drug felonies for allegedly dealing marijuana. Hyer has pleaded not guilty.

The council is expected to appoint a replacement mayor pro tem during Tuesday’s meeting. The mayor pro tem does not have many responsibilities. The position’s primary focus is to serve as the chairman or chairwoman of council meetings in the absence of the mayor and perform some ceremonial duties.
