Olympia man identified after jump from bridge

April 14, 2010

The man who jumped to his death from the Capitol Boulevard bridge Tuesday morning was Paul Backman, 41, Olympia, according to the Thurston County coroner.

Olympia Police officers responded to the Capitol Boulevard bridge around 2:29 a.m. Tuesday, on a report of a suicidal man who was leaning over the fence.

When officers arrived, the man was outside the railing on the east side of the bridge. For more than an hour, officers attempted to talk the man off the bridge, but the man jumped to his death on the northbound lanes of Interstate 5.
