THURSTON COUNTY: Taxable retail sales drop in year-over-year mark

Year-over-year taxable retail sales fell nearly 7 percent in Thurston County, but some industries weathered the downturn in the economy better than others, according to state Department of Revenue data released last week.

The following industries were among the few that showed gains in taxable retail sales in 2009 compared with 2008.

OLYMPIA

Mining: Rose 115.6 percent to $379,434 from $176,006.

Drug and health stores: Rose 19 percent to $23.5 million from $19.7 million.

E-commerce and mail order: Rose 20.1 percent to $14.6 million from $12.2 million.

LACEY

Lawn and garden supplies: Rose 30.1 percent to $548,665 from $421,728.

Books, periodicals, music stores: Rose 149.6 percent to $1.36 million from $546,185.

E-commerce and mail order: Rose 25.3 percent to $3.74 million from $2.99 million.

TUMWATER

Clothing and shoe stores: Rose 17.9 percent to $1.79 million from $1.52 million.

Department stores: Rose 199.4 percent to $272,859 from $91,125.

Transportation and warehousing: Rose 115.5 percent to $1.28 million from $595,696.
