Online high school open houses

Two public online high schools in Thurston County will host open houses this month for prospective parents and students.

WHAT:IQ Academy Washington, a school for sixth- through 12th graders

WHEN: 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday

WHERE: 2300 Evergreen Park Drive S.W., Red Lion Hotel Olympia

WHAT:Insight School of Washington, a high school

WHEN: 6-7:30 p.m. July 28

WHERE: Tumwater Timberland Public Library, 7023 New Market St. S.W., Tumwater Both schools are public and tuition-free, and conducted entirely online. Insight School is run through the Quillayute Valley School district. IQ Academy is run through the Evergreen School District in Clark County.

ABOUT ONLINE SCHOOLS:

State law allows public school districts to operate online schools as public schools, which allows public school students to transfer to an online school. Students attending online high schools have the same requirements for graduation, including passing the High School Proficiency Exam, as students at traditional local public schools.
