Text messages could help fight poaching

The state Department of Fish and Wildlife is turning to text messaging in its battle against poachers and other fish and wildlife violators.

The state agency has added a new text messaging option for people calling the agency’s communications dispatch center to report illegal activity that threatens fish, wildlife and critical habitat.

With state fish and wildlife officers spread so thin, the agency has to rely on the public to help protect the state’s precious natural resources.

Tips can be sent via text message to 847411 (Tip411). The message must begin with the letters WDFWTIP followed by a space, and then a brief description of the violation and location.

One cautionary note, anyone reporting a natural resource crime should not confront the suspect or suspects. Leave that up to a properly trained enforcement officer.
