Tacoma jazz musician and local musical legend Art Mineo has died at 91.

Mineo died Tuesday after suffering from pulmonary fibrosis. He is survived by his wife, Toni, 83; and his son Gene, 61, both of Tacoma.

Mineo was born Aug. 28, 1918, in Brooklyn, N.Y.

During World War II he was posted to Fort Lewis. He remained in Tacoma, married Toni, also a musician, and from the 1950s through the ’70s performed at his club in Tacoma, toured, and arranged for jazz greats including Paul Whitehead. He also helped local bands such as the Ventures and the Wailers get started.
