American is the second U.S. airline to announce its plans for the new jets.
Continental Airlines, which will be merged with United Airlines this fall, has said it will use the first of its 787s on a route from Houston to New Zealand. American said it will be replacing its Boeing 767 fleet with Dreamliners as they begin arriving in 2014. The first Dreamliner will be delivered to Japans All Nippon Airways in the first quarter next year. The planes had once been set for delivery in May 2008.
