This year, Michael Fritsch, who is buying the burger landmark from his father, Chuck, has instead decorated the drive-in restaurant at 2023 Fourth Ave. E., as well as the house he owns next door.
“I thought, let’s show it off and throw a bunch of dead bodies out front,” he said Thursday.
The decorations include pirates, zombies, witches, skeletons, demons and clowns, Fritsch said. He also plans to collect nonperishable food and cash for the Thurston County Food Bank from 7 a.m. to midnight today.
Last year he collected about $2,000 in cash and 1,600 cans of food over three days; he hopes to surpass that total this year, Fritsch said. Although his residence on North Street has yet to be decorated for Halloween, it will be Sunday, he said.
Meanwhile, Fritsch is working toward purchasing the business from his father, who bought the location from the Eagan family in 1969. Fritsch has been involved with the business over the years, including a stint peeling potatoes as a child. Once he becomes owner, Fritsch plans no changes.
“I’m not going to mess with success,” he said.
