Olympia rallies, trips Shelton in overtime

HIGHLIGHTS: Bears beat Highclimbers on Killman's score

Trailing 28-13 at halftime, Olympia pulled out a thrilling 41-35 overtime victory against the Shelton Highclimbers on Friday night at Highclimber Stadium.

Olympia’s Spenser Killman tied the score at 35 on fourth-and-1 from Shelton’s 3-yard line with 2 minutes, 9 seconds left in regulation.

“Shelton played a great football game,” Olympia coach Bill Beattie said. “They smacked us in the mouth in the first half. Luckily we were able to tie it up.”

Killman scored again in overtime for the victory.

Olympia, which clinched its eighth league title in 11 years with last week’s 37-30 win over Bellarmine, is 8-1 overall and 7-0 in the 4A Narrows League.

Shelton is 2-7.

Tumwater 49, Aberdeen 7: Kyle Warner scored three touchdowns, and Andrew Brown returned a punt 38 yards for another score for the Thunderbirds.

Aberdeen scored first on a 68-yard pass, but Tumwater scored 49 points in a row to finish undefeated in the 2A Evergreen Conference and capture the league title.

Tumwater quarterback Daniel Hinkle tossed three touchdown passes, including a 56-yarder to Warner.

Christian Bush caught a 22-yard pass from Hinkle and ran for a 17-yard TD.

Black Hills 56, Woodland 7: The Wolves (2-7) scored 35 unanswered points to lead at halftime, 42-7.

Trailing 7-6, Wolves quarterback Trent Alsin broke loose for a 53-yard touchdown run on a bootleg. Alsin added a 7-yard run on the Wolves’ next possession for a 20-7 lead.

Tom Turner then scored on runs of 45 and 5 yards to give Black Hills a 35-7 lead.

In the third period, Mitchell Stewart pounced on a fumbled pitch in the end zone for a 56-7 lead.

Woodland is 0-8.

Timberline 62, Foss 0: Blazers quarterback Kevin Russell ran for two touchdowns and passed for two others.

Timberline is 6-3, 4-1 in the 3A Narrows League.

Centralia 51, River Ridge 38: The Tigers exploded for 28 points in the second quarter for a 42-12 halftime lead.

The Tigers then survived River Ridge’s wild comeback. The Hawks scored 20 points in the fourth quarter.

River Ridge scored twice in the first quarter on Adam Walker’s 17-yard pass to Jonathon Witt and Brad Wallace’s 66-yard run.

But it was all Centralia in the second quarter, with Zack Baldwin scoring on runs of 2 and 4 yards. Ryker Gronseth recovered a fumble for another Tigers score.

Rainier 40, Rochester 7: Alex Profit ran for two touchdowns and Aaron Riley threw two TD passes for the Mountaineers.

Wilson 21, Yelm 14: The Rams scored two late touchdowns to pull out the win.

Jacob Swilley scored on runs of 4 and 1 yards to give Yelm a 14-6 lead.

SWIMMING

4A district prelims: Kathryn Culhane and Clara Heffernan had two of Olympia’s three firsts in the preliminary round of the 4A girls district swim meet at Rogers High School in Puyallup.

Olympia’s medley relay, made up of Early, Culhane, Kelsey Forbord and Heffernan, also took first with a time of 1:54.7.

Culhane won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:09.

Heffernan won the 500 freestyle in 5:13.
