Snow could get 'troublesome'

After enjoying the novelty of seeing snow for the first time this season Sunday, South Sound residents might find themselves less enamored today.

A winter-weather advisory is in effect through tonight, and Olympia could get up to three inches of snow before it’s all said and done, a National Weather Service meteorologist said Sunday.

Winds up to 25 mph with gusts hitting 40 mph could come along with the snow, making the freezing temperatures feel even colder, NWS meteorologist Dennis D’Amico said.

Travelers may experience difficult conditions and should be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibility as the first snow of the season socks sections of South Sound.

Snow moved into the region Sunday morning, but temperatures were just warm enough to keep it from sticking on the pavement in lower elevations, D’Amico said. Accumulations across the region were expected to be between one and two inches Sunday.

That could all change today.

Today’s expected snow storm looks “more troublesome” as a shot of cold air enters the region this afternoon, D’Amico said. Olympia could see up to three inches of snow, with four inches possible in the foothills. Temperatures will remain frigid through the next few days. Tuesday’s high is expected to top 30 degrees with low temperatures staying in the high teens or low 20s.

“It’s gonna feel cold,” D’Amico said.

Snow in November is not unusual, he added, saying half the years measured by the NWS show measurable snow during the month, mostly in the second half.

Temperatures are forecast to rise as Thanksgiving approaches, with rain likely and a high near 41 expected that day.
