LAKES
American: A few kokanee are still being caught. Look for the fish to be holding in water 40-45 feet deep, said Randy Anderson at Sportco.
Lone (Island County): The trout fishing has been very good, said Mike Chamberlain at Ted’s Sports Center. Try using chironomids or small leech patterns. The rainbows have been averaging 16-17 inches long. Some anglers willing to put in the time are catching as many as 15 fish.
Mayfield: The lake is still producing trout for the bank anglers. Fishing Power Eggs and worms off the bottom is working well.
Sammamish: Those willing to brave the elements have been coming home with good catches of cutthroat trout. Most anglers are fishing needlefish spoons and small cut-plug herring.
RIVERS
Columbia: Steelhead fishing on the upper river near Pateros is in midseason form, Jones said. A Worden’s Maxi Jig in the Calypso pattern under a bobber baited with Pautzke Fire Cured shrimp was very productive. There were few if any anglers out on the lower river, said a state report.
Cowlitz: Fishing has been hit-and-miss in the past few days. When the bite is on, it seems sand shrimp with jig and bobber or corky and yarn is working well for the bank guys, said Marshall Borsom at Fish Country. The boaters pulling divers with eggs or coon-striped shrimp are picking up quite a few. He said some anglers at barrier dam are still catching late coho, and some are chrome bright.
Olympic Coast: The rivers were fishable Tuesday, but there was more rain in the forecast, said Curt Reed at Waters West. Steelhead action has been consistent when the rivers are in shape. If a trip is already planned, the Sol Duc, Bogachiel and Hoh would be good options to start with.
Wynoochee: The steelhead fishing has been very good in recent days. Try using Nightmare bobber and jigs, or corkies and yarn in pinks and peach, Anderson said.
Yakima: There is a lot of ice along the edges and floating downstream as the temperatures warm. Boat anglers willing to give it a try are boating some rainbows, said a report from Red’s Fly Shop.
