Capital led 27-15 at halftime.
“Our defense was tremendous,” Capital coach Doug Galloway said. “They were having a tough time putting the ball into the hole in that first quarter and our shots were going in.”
Colin Bossio led Capital with 11 points.
Capital held Yelm to two points in the third quarter, but the Cougars managed only seven points themselves.
“Any time you hold a team to three points for half of a game (one in the first quarter, two in the third), that’s pretty good,” Galloway said. “Yelm is a good team. I thought both teams played good defense.”
Capital scored 12 points off 10 steals.
“Keenan Williams had a solid game handling the ball for us and he played good defense,” Galloway said.
Keith Anderson led Yelm with 11 points on 5-for-10 shooting.
Capital improved to 10-3 overall and 2-1 in league.
Olympia 64, Shelton 27: Alex Weber-Brader scored 22 points, and Jamey Smith added 15 in the Bears’ win.
Leading 20-10 after the first quarter, Olympia held the Highclimbers to five points in the second quarter and led 36-15 at halftime.
Tre’ Fisher led Shelton with 14 points.
Rainier 57, Rochester 43: Rainier jumped out to a 22-4 lead after the first quarter and then kept Rochester at arm’s length the rest of the game.
Senior center Chris Ashby led Rainier with 18 points, and junior guard Dalton Delio added 13. Brandon Canales led Rochester with 15 points.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Yelm 52, Capital 50: Junior guard Jaynani Cababat sank two free throws with 17 seconds left to break a 50-50 tie, lifting the Tornados to a comeback win.
Capital’s 3-point attempt at the buzzer missed.
“It was an exciting game,” Yelm coach Russ Riches said. “It was a battle, just like it always is with Capital. Both teams played great defense.”
The score was tied at 9 after the first quarter, and Capital led 23-21 at halftime. Yelm outscored the Cougars 16-9 in the third quarter to open a 37-32 lead.
Senior guard Karley Miskimens led Yelm with 15 points, and Anushka Maldonado added 13 points. Senior guard Kelsey Antles topped Capital with 18 points, and senior Kristyn Ross added 16.
Olympia 62, Shelton 15: The Bears led 22-0 after the first quarter and 36-4 at halftime in beating the Highclimbers.
Olivia Rethwill led Olympia with 16 points and Tayler Fettig added 12.
WRESTLING
Tumwater 34, Chehalis 33: Trailing 33-10, Tumwater needed pins in the last four matches to pull out a dramatic win at Chehalis on Thursday night.
Tumwater’s Easton Hargrave (215), Nate Parsons (heavyweight), Austin Chase (103) and finally Daniel Page (112) all won by pins.
“It was intense,” Tumwater coach Tony Prentice said. “I don’t know if we’ve ever won four straight matches by pins to win it.”
Prentice said he was told that it was the first time in 16 years that Tumwater defeated Chehalis.
At 189 pounds, Marquez Bryant got Tumwater’s comeback rolling by winning a 9-8 decision, scoring an escape in the closing seconds to win it.
