Weekend getaway: No Sun Fun Run
Craig Hill, staff writerWhat: Even if the weather is miserable Saturday, runners can have fun pounding the pavement along the Nathan Chapman Trail on South Hill. The event organized by Pierce County Parks and Recreation has routes of one mile and five kilometers (3.1 miles) along the wooded trail. Both routes are flat and do not use roads. The department said the event is noncompetitive and recreationally timed. When: 10 a.m. Saturday Where: Heritage Recreation Center, 9010 128th St. E., Puyallup Getting there: Take the Canyon Road exit from state Route 512, heading south. Turn left onto 128th Street East. The park is about 2.3 miles from the Canyon Road intersection. History: The trail running between Heritage Recreation Center and South Hill Community Park is named after Sgt. 1st Class Nathan Chapman, a former South Hill resident who was killed Jan. 4, 2002, near the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. He was the first U.S. casualty of the war in Afghanistan. Cost: $20 Also: Check-in starts at 9 a.m. Participants in the 5k race receive a “goodie bag.” Shirts are available for $10 but supplies are limited.
