Navigators eliminated

ROUNDUP: Outside shooting lifts Bear Creek to win over Northwest Christian; Rainier girls ousted

February 27, 2011

Northwest Christian's boys basketball team lost to Bear Creek, 73-49, in a Class 2B winner-to-state regional playoff game.

Bear Creek went 13-for-20 from 3-point range.

“They lit us up from the outside,” Navigators coach Rick Fox said. “We were targeting their bigs inside. They have some monsters down low. Their guards went off on us tonight.”

Senior Cole Van Lierop led Northwest Christian with 13 points. The Navigators, who won their first league title to reach the playoffs, finished 19-7.

“We made a lot of our goals this season,” Fox said. “We won our first league title in school history. We just wanted to go a little deeper into the playoffs.”

Bear Creek led 45-26 at halftime and 62-38 going into the fourth quarter.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Seattle Christian 51, Rainier 41: Katie Collier, a 6-foot-2 junior forward, scored 19 points to lead the Warriors past Rainier, ending the Mountaineers’ season.

Rainier trailed by two points in the fourth quarter but could never take the lead in the winner-to-state game.

“Our girls played their hearts out,” Rainier coach Jim Kindle said. “Kristen Schoenherr did everything she could. I’m sure she was playing with a fractured finger.”

Schoenherr led Rainier with 17 points and Kelsey Eygabroad added 10.

“They had a huge size advantage,” Kindle said. “Katie Collier is an amazing player. Our whole game plan was to hold her under 20.”

Rainier trailed at halftime, 26-22. “We had to foul at the end,” Kindle said. “It was realistically a four-point game.”

The Mountaineers finish the season at 20-5, winning league and district titles.
