Weekend getaway: White Pass Winter Carnival

What: White Pass is celebrating the 25th anniversary of its Winter Carnival this weekend. The centerpiece is a giant snow castle kids can slide through on an inner tube. Yakima’s Dave Mahre, who died in 2005, built the original castles. The carnival is packed with lessons, a snow sculpture contest, races and other events. The snow sculpture competition began Thursday.

When: Saturday and Sunday

Where: White Pass Ski Area

Getting there: Follow U.S. 12 to White Pass.

Also: Events include carnival games, face painting, an obstacle course for children, live music, races, fireworks and a parade. Running at the same time is Ski 4 Kids, a two-day kids’ ski and snowboard event that is a fundraiser for Children’s Miracle Network. The cost is $125.

Cost: Lift tickets are $47, $29 for juniors and seniors, free for ages 6 and younger and 73 and older.
