Weekend Getaway: Lynch Creek 5k

What: The Lynch Creek 5K is not your typical 3.1-mile run. It isn't held on city streets but rather on a semi-secluded road near Eatonville. The course is mostly flat with views of Lynch Creek as you run through the woods and pasture land.

The run raises money for a local charity or person in need. This year’s honoree is Riley Taylor, a first-grader who has Long QT Syndrome, a cardiac genetic disorder. Taylor and his family have teamed up with the Tacoma chapter for the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Association to spread awareness and raise money to buy automated external defibrillators for schools and homes.

When: 8 a.m. Saturday

Where: Eatonville Elementary School, 209 Lynch Creek Road E., Eatonville

History: This is the second running of this race. Race organizers plan to continue the race each year with proceeds going to a different charity or organization. Proceeds from last year’s race went to Richelle Heacock, a 2008 Eatonville High graduate who suffered a spinal cord injury in an accident.

Getting there: Follow state Route 161 east to Eatonville. In town, turn left on Lynch Creek Road. Park at the ball field or middle school.

Cost: $30 to run or walk or $10 for ages 11 and younger.

Also: The race starts at 9 a.m., and the kids 1k fun run start at 10 a.m. Snacks and water will be available. Registration begins at 5:30 a.m. Runners must return timing chips after the race or face a charge of $25.
