Gamecocks suspend QB Garcia indefinitely

McClatchy news servicesApril 7, 2011

South Carolina quarterback Stephen Garcia has been indefinitely suspended, leaving his future with the program in jeopardy, less than two weeks after he guaranteed he would not get in trouble again.

Athletic director Eric Hyman announced the suspension Wednesday, saying: “Stephen has exhibited behavior that is unacceptable for one of our student-athletes. Therefore, he has forfeited the privilege to participate in any football related activity until further notice.”

Coach Steve Spurrier said Garcia’s suspension would last through the spring, with his status beyond to be determined.

It is Garcia’s fifth suspension – and second this spring – since arriving on campus in January 2007. He helped the Gamecocks win the Southeastern Conference Eastern Division title last fall.
