Few changes for salmon season

With some changes to account for the pink salmon run later this summer, salmon fishing seasons in the South Sound are identical to last season.

The state Department of Fish and Wildlife has released the season dates and limits for the waters of Puget Sound and the Columbia River. These were approved at an April meeting of the Pacific Fishery Management Council.

Similar information for the rivers that feed into Puget Sound has not been released yet.

Here are the basic seasons for the three areas of the South Sound:

Marine Area 11 (Tacoma-Vashon)

June 1-June 30: Chinook - minimum size 22 inches. Other salmon species - no minimum size. Daily limit two (combined). Release wild chinook.

July 1-Sept. 30: Chinook - minimum size 22 inches. Other salmon species - no minimum size. Daily limit two (combined) plus two additional pink salmon. Release wild chinook.

Oct. 1-Oct. 31: Chinook - minimum size 22 inches. Other species - no minimum size. Daily limit two (combined).

Nov. 1-Dec. 31: Chinook - minimum size 22 inches. Other species - no minimum size. Daily limit two (combined). Only one chinook may be retained.

Feb. 1-April 30: Chinook - minimum size 22 inches. Other species - no minimum size. Daily limit two. Release wild chinook.

Marine Area 12 (Hood Canal)

South of Ayock Point

July 1-Oct. 15: Chinook - minimum size 22 inches. Other species - no minimum size. Daily limit four (combined). Up to two chinook may be retained. Release chum.

North of Ayock Point

Sept. 1-Oct. 15: No minimum size. Daily limit four coho only.

Entire area

Oct. 16-Dec. 31: Chinook - minimum size 22 inches. Other species - no minimum size. Daily limit four (combined). Only one chinook may be retained.

Feb. 1-April 30: Chinook - minimum size 22 inches. Other species - no minimum size. Daily limit 2. Release wild chinook.

Hoodsport Hatchery Zone

July 1-Dec. 31: No minimum size. Daily limit 4 (combined). Up to two chinook 24 inches or longer may be retained. Night closure. July 1-Oct. 15: release chum. Please respect private property adjacent to hatchery.

Quilcene/Dabob Bay Fishery

Aug. 16-Oct. 15: No minimum size. Daily limit 4 coho only.

Marine Area 13 (South Sound)

May 1-June 30: Chinook - minimum size 22 inches. Other species - no minimum size. Daily limit two (combined). Release wild chinook.

July 1-Sept. 30: Chinook - minimum size 22 inches. Other species - no minimum size. Daily limit two (combined). Release wild chinook and wild coho.

Oct. 1-Oct. 31: Chinook - minimum size 22 inches. Other species - no minimum size. Daily limit two (combined). Release wild coho.

Nov. 1-Dec. 31 Chinook - minimum size 22 inches. Other species - no minimum size. Daily limit two (combined). Only one chinook may be retained.

Jan. 1-April 30: Chinook - minimum size 22 inches. Other species - no minimum size. Daily limit one.
