SUNNYSIDE, WASH. - Officials say a gunman is dead after opening fire on police in Sunnyside.

Sunnyside Chief Phil Schenck says officers pulled over a car just before 9 p.m. Saturday night, and as they were removing the car's occupants, one pulled out a handgun and started shooting. An officer returned fire and killed the man. No police were hurt.

KNDO-TV reports that the police department has asked the Washington State Patrol to conduct the investigation. The officer involved in the shooting is on paid leave, as dictated by standard procedure.

The gunman has yet to be identified, pending an autopsy by the Yakima County coroner.
