Vandals tried to plug toilets at the new City Hall in Olympia with quick-setting cement, but it was cleaned out and flushed away without causing damage.

Assistant City Manager Jay Burney said a man and woman with backpacks looked suspicious Friday when they entered City Hall, headed to the public restrooms off the lobby then quickly left.

Counter employees notified building staff, who scooped cement out of one toilet each in the men’s and women’s restrooms.

Burney said Monday the two were recorded in the lobby on security video and police are investigating.

An anonymous posting on the pugetsoundanarchists.org website says the vandalism was a May Day action seeking destruction of the state and capitalism.

The new $36 million City Hall opened in March.
