LACEY — The list of candidates for the vacant Lacey city manager position is shrinking, but little more will be known about the applicants until finalists are selected.

WHAT'S NEXT

Public meetings are scheduled for Aug. 4-5 to introduce finalists for the Lacey city manager job. A public reception is scheduled the first night, with interviews slated for the next evening.

The Lacey City Council met in both regular and executive session Thursday evening with the president of Prothman Co., the executive search firm hired by the city to find a replacement for the retired Greg Cuoio. The council planned to decide on about a dozen semifinalists during an executive session, Mayor Tom Hunter said before the meeting.

"From that number, hopefully we can collectively identify a finalist group," Greg Prothman, president of the search firm, told the council Thursday. Prothman said he will interview semifinalists before next week's meeting, when the council is expected to again go into executive session to decide on a short list of finalists.

The firm received 52 applications; 34 were forwarded to the council, according to an email from city human resources director Mary Lannoye to city employees.

One known applicant is assistant city manager Scott Spence, who has said he applied for the position.

Before going into executive session Thursday, Nelson said council would not make any announcements or release candidate names after emerging from behind closed doors.

State law allows the council to use executive session to evaluate the qualifications of applicants for the city manager job, city attorney Ken Ahlf said. Final action on hiring must take place during a public hearing, according to the law.
