Tenino’s Quarry Pool will remain open through Labor Day weekend, ending speculation that swim season would end early due to budget constraints.

The Tenino City Council passed a motion during its meeting Tuesday to keep the pool open after discussing alternate funding sources to close an estimated $11,400 budget shortfall.

The council identified that letters requesting funds went out to the Thurston County United Way, the Confederated Tribes of the Chehalis Reservation and the Nisqually Indian Tribe, said Betty Garrison, city clerk-treasurer.

Earlier this month, city officials met with Thurston County Commissioner Cathy Wolfe and different stakeholders to find a short-term funding solution. After that meeting, Tenino Mayor Ken Jones said he was optimistic the pool would remain open at least another two weeks.

The council is also working on a grant application through the Thurston County Historic Commission to purchase equipment for the pool, Garrison said.

Since July 18, the city has received about $650 in donations for the pool, including seven “significant” donations and money from a donation box at the pool, according to the city.
