Everyone pays when women lack resources

In a recent letter to the editor, Roy Murray rails about the Obama health plan providing free birth control and HIV testing. Mr. Murray may not be aware of the benefits of preventive care.

Obamacare calls for contraception coverage as part of paid basic health insurance. It is not free. Women get pregnant; men get them pregnant.

Women should not be made to pay for something men use, but do not pay for. Contraception prevents unintended pregnancy which not only prevents abortions, but also saves millions of dollars in caring for unplanned children. Like it or not, Mr. Murray, all of society pays when women do not have the resources to support their children. In regard to HIV: A person can have HIV and not know it. Thus, the disease can be unintentionally spread. Free testing often picks up the disease early when it can be effectively treated at much reduced cost and morbidity. Birth control coverage and HIV testing would save tens of millions of dollars at a relatively minuscule cost, and provide people with safety and security knowing that they are HIV free and able to plan the time of a wanted pregnancy.
