Fitzgerald and team president Michael Bidwill appeared at a hastily called news conference Saturday night to announce the agreement.
Fitzgerald, the third overall park in the 2004 draft at the age of 19, spoke of the opportunity to spend his entire career with one team.
“It is an honor,” he said. “I am so fortunate. Not many players have that opportunity but Michael has allowed me that opportunity and I just want to repay him with great effort and winning. That is what is important.”
The 6-foot-3, 218-pound receiver is Arizona’s career leader in receptions with 613. In Arizona’s surprise run to the Super Bowl in the 2008 season, Fitzgerald shattered most of the NFL playoff receiving records.
Fitzgerald, who will turn 28 Aug. 31, has topped 1,000 yards receiving in five of his seven NFL seasons, including the last four.
CARDS LOSE ROOKIE RB
Arizona rookie running back Ryan Williams will undergo surgery early next week to repair a ruptured patella tendon in his right knee.
The season-ending injury for the second-round draft pick out of Virginia Tech came in the Cardinals’ 28-20 loss at Green Bay on Friday night. Coach Ken Whisenhunt said on Saturday the team will be looking to sign a running back soon, if only because one is needed to round out practice repetitions, then keep looking as other teams cut rosters.
Cardinals coaches had been impressed with Williams in training camp, with his hard-running style and ability to make cuts. His addition was a major reason the team was willing to trade Tim Hightower to the Washington Redskins.
Williams was hurt in the third quarter when he landed awkwardly after being tackled from behind.
PEYTON WON’T PLAY
Peyton Manning says he doesn’t expect to play in the Colts’ final two exhibition games but hopes to be ready for the Sept. 11 regular-season opener at Houston.
Manning had surgery to repair a nerve in his neck in May and hasn’t practiced since the lockout ended.
The decision also could endanger his streak of 227 consecutive starts, which includes the playoffs. It’s the second longest streak by a quarterback in NFL history behind recently retired Brett Favre’s 297.
PRYOR DROPS APPEAL
Terrelle Pryor worked out for 17 NFL teams Saturday in Greensburg, Pa., and said afterward he wouldn’t appeal his five-week suspension at the start of the NFL season.
With the former Ohio State quarterback trying to prove he should be taken in Monday’s supplemental draft, spectators included Steelers coach Mike Tomlin and director of football operations Kevin Colbert and Colts owner Jim Irsay.
Pryor worked out at a high school stadium near his hometown of Jeannette, Pa. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.36 seconds.
